Rules for Texas Hold'Em
Objective: Put together the best five-card hand from two pocket cards and five
community cards; or, cause all opponents to fold before showing your hand.
Procedure: At the beginning of a hand each player is dealt two pocket cards that
only he can see, and an initial round of betting occurs.
The first and second players in the betting order must place special bets called
blinds. These ensure that there is some money in the pot at the beginning of a
hand.
After the initial round of betting, the dealer deals three community cards that
all players can see. A second round of betting follows.
The dealer deals an additional community card before the third and fourth rounds
of betting. After the fourth round, any players that have not yet folded compare
hands in order to determine the winner.
Betting: Betting occurs in a downward order, beginning with the player
immediately below the dealer. The following choices can be made at various
moments in the game:
Bet: Place an amount of chips in the pot. The following bettors must match or
raise this amount.
Raise: Increase the bet placed by a previous player. All bettors must match or
raise this amount.
Call: Match the bet placed by the previous player.
Check: Do nothing and pass the opportunity to the next player. This is legal if
no previous player placed or raised a bet in the current round.
Fold: Give up and lose any chips that you placed on the table.
A round of betting is finished when all players have acted at least once and
contributed the same amount to the pot.
The rules determine the size of the mandatory bets. Use the Game screen to
adjust these rules.
Dealing: Players take turns dealing. A blue dot in the upper left corner of a
player's icon identifies the dealer. The dealer is the last person to act in a
round of betting. After each finished hand, the dealer position is moved down
one player.
Omaha: The objective and rules of Omaha poker are similar to Texas Hold Em. Put
together the best five-card hand from four pocket cards and five community
cards. The hand must consist of three community cards and two pocket cards.
