ControlBar provides a popup tool strip accessible from anywhere within the Palm OS. You can configure this strip by adding modules, either those provided with the application, or supplied by a third party. To access the ControlBar, simply do a reverse menu stroke:

After making this stroke, the ControlBar will appear:

The various icons on the ControlBar each perform different actions. You can drag the bar to any side of the screen, or make it vertical:

After first installing it, or when adding additional tools, you can configure it by tapping the ControlBar icon in the Application Launcher (). When the application opens, you will be presented with a checklist of tools:

Those icons that are checked off will appear in the bar. You can preview what the bar will look like by tapping the button. Check off a tool to include it in the bar, and uncheck it to remove it.

If you want to delete a tool, or beam it to another users, you can tap the , which will bring up the Tool Manager:

From this screen, you can tap on a tool, then either beam or delete it.

You can configure your ControlBar preferences via the menu, which will bring up the Preferences screen:

If "Enable ControlBar" is checked, you can access the ControlBar in any application. If you decide to delete ControlBar, be sure to uncheck this checkbox first.

"Show Time in ControlBar" toggles the digital clock in the ControlBar on and off.

If "Show Large Icons" is checked, the large icons for the ControlBar are used.

Each of the tools are described below:

App Popup
When tapped, this icon will popup a list of all applications, selecting one will open that application.

Toggle Backlight
This will toggle your backlight on and off.

Beam Database
Tapping this will bring up a quick list of all your applications and databases, to quickly beam one to another Palm OS device. You can beam any application, or any database (such as your Names database).

Note: you cannot beam ROM applications, or locked (copy protected) applications.

Cut, Copy, Paste
You can tap on to cut selected text, to copy selected text, and to paste the clipboard. The icons will only appear when valid.

Enter Debug
This tool is really only for developers. Tapping the icon is the equivilent of writing shortcut-dot-dot-two.

Mute
Tapping this will turn off the Game and System sound if it's on, or set it to maximum if it's muted already. It will not affect the Alarm volume.

Web Clipping Popup
This will popup a list of all installed Web Clippings (PQA's) on your Palm VII. On non-Palm VII devices, it won't do anything.

Recent Names
The will popup a list of your most recently accessed name (Address Book) cards. Tapping on a name will open the Address Book to that name. You must have Super Names installed to use this tool.

Reset Device
Tapping this will do a soft reset, the equivilent of pushing the button on the back of the machine. You will not lose any data doing this.

Scan Barcode
If you're running on a Symbol device, this will turn on the barcode scanner. Point the device at a barcode and press one of the scan triggers, and the barcode will be pasted after the cursor. On a non-symbol device, this does nothing.

Quick Timer
This will engage a timer. You can tap the digits to collapse the timer (so that it takes up less space in the bar) and tap to expand the time. The timer will continue to run while collapsed. Tap to start the timer, to pause it, and to clear it.

Note: the timer will not show up when the bar is vertical.

It's easy to develop plug-in tools for ControlBar. We're working on a download package for this, but if you're interested, please email us, and we'll mail you the required files.
